Maddie asked:
In class, we are writing a descriptive essay about a picture that we found. All nouns must have adjectives in front of them, and I must use sensory language.
But we are not allowed to use the linking verbs; is, am, are, was, being, been, and be.
I was just wondering what the benefit of this is. What is writing with the absence of linking verbs helping us learn?

This assignment teaches you to use your imagination when you write. In the end, this will make you a better writer. Look at the following examples. Which one paints a picture in your mind? Which one uses linking verbs? Which one uses action verbs?
My room is small. My bed is very close to the door. There is a table in the corner in front of the closet door. There is only one window.
My small room squeezes the life out of me. The door bangs into the foot of my twin-sized bed when I open it. A table hides in the corner and blocks the closet door. A lonely window shows the big beauty of the wonderful world outside the closed confines of my tiny room.
